Description

Readers of Self-Care: Selfish or Sacred? An Interactive Guide to Myths and Misunderstandings are encouraged to personalize each chapter by answering questions and writing prayers. This 28-page PDF guide can be used for groups who would like to discuss their answers and delve deeper into each section.

General Suggestions for Facilitating a Group:

  1. Meeting in a comfortable setting, such as a coffee shop or someone’s home encourages relaxed discussion. An ideal group size is eight to ten people.  For computer users, virtual meetups (such as Zoom or Jitzi meet) would also work.  Depending on the group’s preference and availability, plan for an hour and fifteen to an hour and thirty minutes.
  2. The best way to invite others to the group is word of mouth.  Assure potential participants that no one will be forced to read aloud or share answers. Remind everyone that personal information will not be shared beyond group time.
  3. Obtain contact information before the first meeting and for any new attendees at future meetings.  If meeting in person, provide extra Bibles, pens and paper. To fully benefit from this study, each participant needs a copy of the book (and your encouragement ) to complete readings and answer questions.
  4. Here is one option for a six session study (either weekly or biweekly):Meeting 1: Ask each participant to briefly introduce themselves, and answer an icebreaker question.
Then introduce the book and study the first chapter.Meeting 2:  Cover Myth Two and Myth Three.Meeting 3: Cover Myth Four and Myth Five.Meeting 4: Cover Myth Six and Myth Seven.Meeting 5: Cover Myth Eight and Myth Nine.Meeting 6: Cover Myth Ten, conclusion and final remarks.
  5. This guide suggests which sections to read aloud and which questions to discuss. Footnotes provide references and answers. Most likely there will not be time to read or answer all the book’s questions. Remember, it’s perfectly okay when the facilitator does not know all the answers. “I will get back to you about that” or “That’s a good one for us to ask our pastors” are excellent responses!
  6. Start and end each session with prayer such as, “Dear Lord, calm our distracted hearts. Help us hear and learn according to your will, and may our discussion glorify you. In your Son’s name.”  May the Holy Spirit give you the confidence to know he is with you and helping you.
